Blanton, Phils finish off Crew; Phillies take NLDS, 3-1
All good things must come to an end.
The Brewers could not figure out Joe Blanton Sunday afternoon, and lost the fourth and final game of the NLDS, 6-2.
Brewers' pitcher Jeff Suppan gave up a home run to the first hitter of the afternoon, Phils' shortstop Jimmy Rollins, in an omen of things to come. Suppan gave up a 3-run shot to Pat Burrell in the 3rd, immediately followed by another solo shot by Jayson Werth. Burrell also hit a solo shot off Brewers' reliever Guillermo Mota in the 8th for the 6th and final Phils' run of the day.
Congratulations to the Phillies. I hate to admit it, but, as good pitching almost always beats good hitting, the Phils were the better team with better pitching, as three of their four starters dominated the Brewers.
The Phillies move on to host the Dodgers for the NLCS crown. I think that this could wind up being a good match-up--I'll be cheering for the Dodgers, but I think the Phillies' offense may be just strong enough to take the pennant.
I'll still be posting in the off-season, likely two times a week--typically once during the week, and another post during the weekend...thank you, Brewers, for a wonderful 2008...we can't wait until pitchers and catchers report in four months!
