Brewers' pitchers' numbers, last 30 days
As I had a second, I wanted to see if this meltdown over the last month could be attributed to some/most/all of the pitching...I decided to look at by IP, simply because those that pitch the most (or at least get the most outs) will have a greater influence...here's what I found:
- C Capuano 35.1 IP, 8.21 K/9, 1.51 WHIP, 5.35 ERA...definitely not a good #2 starter
- Y Gallardo 31.2 IP, 7.21 K/9, 1.31 WHIP, 4.83 ERA...skewed after yesterday's poor outing
- C Vargas 28.2 IP, 5.74 K/9, 1.56 WHIP, 6.28 ERA...has definitely dropped off
- J Suppan 28.0 IP, 3.86 K/9, 1.61 WHIP, 4.18 ERA...last three numbers surprised me...he puts a lot on, but keeps them from scoring
- D Bush 23.1 IP, 7.40 K/9, 1.52 WHIP, 5.79 ERA...just slightly better than Vargas
- M Parra 17.2 IP, 9.42 K/9, 1.22 WHIP, 3.06 ERA...2 of 6 appearances have been 6+ innings, with only 1 ER in each
- C Villanueva 14.1 IP, 10.21 K/9, 2.13 WHIP, 11.30 ERA...needs a rest
- B Shouse 13.1 IP, 7.56 K/9, 0.84 WHIP, 2.03 ERA...plus he hasn't given up a HR all year
- D Turnbow 12.1 IP, 12.64 K/9, 1.65 WHIP, 5.11 ERA...either fans 'em or gives up a hit
- F Cordero 12.0 IP, 9.00 K/9, 1.42 WHIP, 4.50 ERA...fans 1 per inning...but lets 1½ on
- C Spurling 10.1 IP, 6.24 K/9, 1.58 WHIP, 7.84 ERA...but only allowed earned runs in 3 of last 10 appearances
- M Wise 8.0 IP, 7.88 K/9, 2.63 WHIP, 6.75 ERA...now only useful to get a lefty hitter out
- S Linebrink 5.0 IP, 10.80 K/9, 1.20 WHIP, 1.80 ERA...small sample, but needs to be THE go-to reliever after the starter comes out
-
Conclusions:
- Parra should replace Vargas in the rotation. Vargas hasn't had it lately, and Parra has earned the chance to start
- Linebrink should be the first choice out of the pen in any close game, as he keeps them off the bases
- Spurling can also get an early look, but yank him if 2 of the first 3 hitters gets on
- Shouse should be used for a whole inning, not just to face one lefty
- Wise should be used to face one lefty
- Turnbow should be used in the 7th and 8th innings in tie games
- Villanueva should get sent down to Nashville, and be replaced by Stephen Bray (5-2, 1.61 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 8.51 K/9 in Nashville)
